Cutting polystyrene foam can be a tough job if you don’t know what tools to use for specific sizes and types of foam. However, these 3 tools will make the job easy for you:
- Craft knife
- Hand saw
- Power saw
Craft knife
Cutting small foam pieces? Use a craft knife as it is the best tool for cutting small, thin pieces of foam. The sharp blades in craft knives can flatten or compress the polystyrene, unlike serrated blades. Make sure not to use craft knives for thick foams of approximately 2.5 cm or more as it will result in uneven cuts in thick foam.
You can use craft knives to create precise bevel cuts and v-cuts in foams. Make sure to cut the polystyrene with small, steady movements. Do an initial cut then mark the portions. Run the craft knife through the foam from top to bottom, several times, until it is completely cut. Change rusty, dull blades with new ones to avoid rough, ugly slices in the foam.
Hand saw
Cut the foam with hand saw such as pruning saw, coping saw or hacksaw to create straight cuts in polystyrene foam. If your saw has a flexible blade, always check this first as it can wobble through the foam resulting in damaged and uneven cuts.Use long, sawing motions when cutting the foam. Using a hand saw will ensure you use only just enough pressure to prevent crushing the foam.
Electric saw
Want clean, exact foam cuts? Use aelectric saw such as a jigsaw, band saw or scroll saw. These saws are generally used for cutting wood and will give clean, precise cuts for your polystyrene foam. Electric saws are best in cutting large, bulky foam pieces with thick layers. Make sure to use safety goggles and follow the directions when using any type of saw for safety reasons.
