Home Décor with Topiary

No need to buy expensive topiary to add décor to your living areas when you can do it yourself! Custom make your own topiary that suits your taste. Simply follow the easy how-to steps to achieve the best results.

Steps to create topiary:

  1. Paint the pot
  2. Paint the polystyrene ball
  3. Glue on the split peas
  4. Place foam in the pot
  5. Add moss
  6. Connect the foam and ball

Paint the pot

Coat your pot using white acrylic paint then leave it to dry for a few hours. You can also paint the inner part of the pot to make it last longer.

Using thick rubber banks place them on the pot to create stripes, shapes and designs. Coat desired areas of your pot carefully with your favourite colour. Make sure it is completely dry before moving the rubber bands to create further shapes and designs. Choose another colour to blend with the first then coat it between the rubber bands.

Carefully remove the rubber bands off the pot when the paint is completely dry to avoid chipping the paint.

Paint the polystyrene ball

Always ask your manufacturer for tips in painting a polystyrene ball as some paints will melt the foam. Coat the ball with a layer of paint using your ideal colour.

Glue the split peas

Using split peas attach them to the ball by applying a thick layer of glue to a section of the ball. Sprinkle split peas on the glued portion.  Let it dry, then do other sections. It is best to keep the ball on a paper tray to keep the split peas spreading everywhere. Let the ball dry overnight then fill in the tiny holes with a second layer using the same process.

Place foam in the pot

Cut the foam following the shape of your pot, either square or round, to fit inside the pot.

Add moss

Brush a thick layer of glue on the foam then push the moss on the glue to make sure it will stick. You can add as much moss as you want to cover the empty edges of the pot.

Connect the ball and foam

Check the surfaces of the ball and foam and make sure they are both totally dry. Push a stick into the centre of the ball and foam. You can use a colourful straw rather than shish-kabob stick to create a more artistic design in your topiary. Make sure the stick is properly positioned and secure to prevent damage to your topiary.

How to Sand Polystyrene?

Styrene cowPolystyrene has been widely used as modeling material in several industries; kitchen, stage plays and construction.

It can be used for cake moulds, stage plays it has been used as props or set decoration.

For making models for gaming, almost anything you can think of polystyrene will suit your need. When it comes to building and construction, polystyrene has been used as cornice moulding, concrete blocks, window fills and even as a great insulation material.

All of these uses of polystyrene require cutting, shaping and sanding of the material in order to get the desired result. Sanding is the last thing you do with your polystyrene sheet before it is put to use. Sanding is very important because it is in thisstage where signs of cutting and shaping throughout the sheet are being removed.

Sanding doesn’t need carpenter’s skill. A simple knowledge of sanding is important. By following these simple instructions that we at Polystyrene Central suggest, you can perform this task smoothly.

Here are the steps:

  1. Cut and shape your foam to desired shape and size before proceeding on sanding it and don’t ever do it the other way. Clear away leftover offcuts and foam pellets as this could cause a rip on your foam. Finalize the desired shape of the polystyrene sheet.
  2. Start sanding the sheet using fine sandpaper, 100-grit coarse sandpaper is good enough to remove undesired foam section while maintaining neatness and accuracy. You can switch the sandpaper whenever you find it overused already.
  3. Consider using a blocker or sanding block pad ( pick of wood which you wrap the sandpaper around) to shape large flat areas of the foam. Just keep in mind not to use a blocker on areas that contain small details and needs accuracy.
  4. For finalising your work, use finest grade sandpaper to smoothen your work and apply finishing touches. Wipe the foams surface to clear debris and undesired foam materials.
