Instructions for DIY polystyrene Christmas decorations:

Polystyrene Balls

Sort unused polystyrene balls into sizes; small, medium and large. Use toothpicks or unused sticks to connect three polystyrene balls with different sizes to form a snowman’s body. Apply colour using a floral paint. Use buttons for the eyes. Make use of those piled old cardboards boxes you have to make a hat for your snowman, cereal ones work well. Use orange coloured paper ( or colour it with textas) for the snowman’s nose. Connect them using toothpicks too.

Polystyrene Christmas Kissing Balls

Wrap a Christmas themed fabric around a polystyrene ball. Leave enough fabric at the top for easy handling by gathering the fabric tightly then twisting it a little. Secure it with a rubber band or a string. Tie a bright coloured ribbon to hide the extra fabric.

Collect polystyrene balls of different sizes. Lay down an old newspaper and sprinkle red or green coloured silver glitter on it. Apply glue on around the polystyrene balls then gently roll it on the laid silver glitter (or preferred colour). Cover the entire surface of the polystyrene ball, let it dry. Do the other polystyrene balls. Look for a peanut butter or vegemite container lid, you can use the yellow or paint it with gold if you like and tie a string through its center. Using stick glue, connect the lid to the coloured polystyrene balls. Tie a ribbon just above the lid then hang in your ceiling the Christmas balls using the string. Arrange them in a descending and spiral manner.

When you decorate your Christmas, do you usually leave your walls empty? Why not take advantage of this space and make a centre piece for your theme. Your wall is a large space which gives you a wonderful opportunity to make a big feature piece this Christmas.

Let’s start on your Christmas Wall Art

The Materials

Here’s what you will need:

  • Christmas holiday fabric or good quality paper
  • 1 large piece of polystyrene or 3 smaller panels of polystyrene
  • Raffia, ribbon or a string
  • Glue gun and glue stick

Are you ready to make one for your very own wall art for your home?

Wall Art Step by Step

  1. Cut polystyrene if you are using a large piece. Cut it into your desired shape and sizes. Rectangle polystyrene is a good idea as they can complement your walls better. 3 panels work really well.

2. Cut your fabric – about 3cm larger the size of your polystyrene board, so you can fold and glue it under making neat edges.

3. Using your glue stick and gun, glue the fabric tightly to your board. Carefully pull the fabric to make sure that it lays flat on your board. Don’t worry about covering the back of the board because that will go on the wall, just overlap a little so you can make nice neat edges.

4.Take your raffia, ribbon or chosen trimming. Cut it to length with enough to hang your boards. Cut it in half so you’ll have two pieces of ribbon. Glue these pieces to the back of your board.

5. Tie your bow and hang your board.

Now you have a lovely centre piece for your Christmas theme, cheap and easy to make DIY Christmas art that makes your boring wall extra fabulous.
